1. No punishment anyone
might inflict on us could possibly be worse than the punishment we inflict on ourselves by
conspiring in our own diminishment.
Parker Palmer quoted in I Will Not Die an Unlived Life by Dawna Markova
Just for today, try to conspire in your own enhancement! Right now,
name three qualities or accomplishments that you cherish in yourself. Many of us find this
simple exercise difficult, as if its vain or self-serving to recognize the great
things about who we are; yet only when we see ourselves to be worthy of respect do we
choose to act and live in a manner that reflects this belief. I feel that failing to
recognize our inherent value and worth is the biggest obstacle in our quest to lose weight
and achieve optimal well being.
2. Question:
I heard that Ab-Rollers are an extremely
effective method for toning abdominal muscles. Is this true?
Answer:
Although the American Council on
Exercise (ACE) hasn't found anything inherently wrong with the various ab-rollers that you
see on TV infomercials, they still do not recommend them as the perfect solutionas
many manufacturers claim them to befor a good reason: These machines dont do
anything better than what you can already do at home, given a few good abdominal exercises
and a floor. Further, many manufacturers claim that you can lose pounds and inches
effortlessly with their product, but then they also recommend diet and exercise as part of
the prescription. In other words, eating a healthy diet is imperative to a healthy
waistline, not just sit-ups. So get rid of the junk food and give me 10!
3. Quiz:
Compulsive Overeating Quiz
All of us have tendencies to overeat now and then, but when it affects your life
negatively, its time to get back in touch with the real issues in our lives that
affect our emotional and physical well being. This series of questions may help you
determine if you are a compulsive overeater.
If you answer YES to several of the following questions, you may be eating for emotional
reasons, not physical ones. These questions are from Overeaters Anonymous, Inc.
1. Do you eat
when you're not hungry?
2. Do you go
on eating binges for no apparent reason?
3. Do you have
feelings of guilt and remorse after overeating?
4. Do you give
too much time and thought to food?
5. Do you look
forward with pleasure and anticipation to the time when you can eat alone?
6. Do you plan
these secret binges ahead of time?
7. Do you eat
sensibly before others and make up for it alone?
8. Is your
weight affecting the way you live your life?
9. Have you
tried to diet for a week (or longer), only to fall short of your goal?10. Do you resent others telling you to
"use a little willpower" to stop overeating?
11. Despite evidence to the contrary,
have you continued to assert that you can diet "on your own" whenever you wish?
12. Do you crave to eat at a definite time,
day or night, other than mealtime? 13. Do
you eat to escape from worries or trouble?
14. Have you ever been treated for
obesity or a food-related condition?
15. Does your eating behavior make you
or others unhappy?
* For more for information on dealing with emotional eating, re-read pages 89-93 in my
book. The philosophy, tools and tips that I discuss here still help me to this day. See
